Why is the Cross the symbol of Christianity? ?

Posted by jack under enart.hubeidaxue.com

  • I don't get why the cross is the Symbol of Christianity, It's not like Jesus or God said so it's not even in the Bible. And I think it borders Idolatry, because people think of it as so holy when no one ever said it was holy, I see people kiss it and hold it close? That doesn't make any sense to me.
I mean why make the cross holy, because Jesus died on it it was only that shape to put up his body, if he was crucified on a triangle would that be the Symbol of Christianity?

Please explain, Thank you same with the Star of David

The Cresent and the moon isn't holy for Muslims btw, it was created by the Ottoman Turks, so it's not the symbol of Islam, because Islam doesn't have one.

  • very good question. There are 2 crosses the unk with the circle at the top that reprsents eternal life. And the cross that christianity bares which has represented death since it was created which is the same cross that is found in cemetaries. The heavenly father said he is the same today tomorrow and forever. And right the biblw never said anything about the cross being holy that's a part of a pagan ritual they added to gain the control of the masses.

  • The cross was used probably because it is a pagan symbol of Tamas the reincarnated Nimrod. So it would have been a insult for a believer in Yahweh God to die on it. Constantine choose it as the symbol because of it's significances to pagans when he setup his Christian version of church so it would satisfy his followers that were pagan.

  • I can't speak for all Christians, but for me, the cross is only a symbol of the sacrifice Jesus made for humanity. The cross isn't holy or something to be worshipped.

We use objects as symbols a lot. I'm looking right now at a symbol --- my wedding ring, a symbol of my love for my wife.

  • I believe that Christians use the cross and the crucifix as a symbol not because they want to glorify the pain that Jesus went through, but the fact that (as they believe) Jesus died for humanity. It is a symbol of his sacrifice to us (as humans), and on that note yes, I think a triangle probably would be the common symbol if Jesus had died on that and not a cross.

  • i always found that odd that they would use the thing that jesus as well as so many others died on as a symbol for their religion. say a thousand years from now, people are going to worship saddam husein, does that mean their going to use a noose as their symbol?

  • Because he died for OUR sins.
    That's why we worship it.
He wasen't the only one who died on a cross, it wasen't just reserved for him.
    Thousands of others did too.
But he is God made man, who died on the crucifix so we could be made children of God and open the gates to Heaven again.

  • it's because Jesus gave his life for us by dying on the cross (or crucifix). He gave his life to let us be free of sin. The only sin we have is sin committed by ourself intentionally. If you want to learn more here's a website that could help-----http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_c...

  • It's because that is where Jesus died, and it's an easy symbol to re-create. For example, how would you pull together a symbol of Him fasting for 40 days in the desert? Or riding into Jerusalem on a donkey? Can you imagine people wearing gold donkeys around their necks?

I go further than you, I don't think it borders idolatry, I think it IS idolatry and I won't have one. But that doesn't change the fact that it's the symbol my religion adopted. And yes, if He had of been crucified on a triangle, we'd probably see them everywhere.

  • I think it's just a remembrance. I am Christian and never heard that it is holy. I don't attend church but I haven't heard that from people I know that do attend church.
Seeing people kiss it, to me, is just like watching a baseball player tap the outside of the box, or tug on his right pant leg every time they will take a swing.
Like when people cross their hands when they pray or close their eyes. Some people have superstitions as well and I don't think you should rule that out either.

    PEACE!!

  • The reason why in the Bible it says take up my bare my cross. True Jesus died on the cross but it is also the symbol of his suffering that he went through for you amd me. I choose to accept it as fact do you?
Also the Bible says that every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. You can say it now or wait and if you choose to wait it may be too late.

  • According to Christianity, Jesus died for our sins on the cross. The whole religion revolves around that concept basically. You go to reconciliation to be absolved of sin, etc. The cross shows that Jesus loves us and we don't have to live in sin because of his sacrifice.

  • If he'd been executed today the symbol would be an electric chair or a needle. Guess the Cross looks cooler but it's still a torture device. Goes along with most of the hidden hypocrisy of the "Peace and Love" religion that is Christianity. Accept Jesus and don't go to Hell, never heard of the guy suffer for all Eternity. Yah, real just.

  • Early on the symbol of choice was a fish. The cross came a little later. It was the alter on which the last blood sacrifice was made, the only one that could obliterate all sin.Mostly it's Catholics that leave the figure of Christ nailed to the cross. Protestants have an empty cross to further symbolize the risen savior and the fact that HE rose from the dead. If the Romans had used some other thing to make their targets suffer then probably we would remember with that.Islam has no symbol of salvation because there is no salvation in Islam.

  • Because our victory was won on the cross.

1Co 2:7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:
1Co 2:8 Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

Gal 6:14 But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.

  • We humans are fond of symbols. They give us something to hold onto. But technically, they have little or no influence.

We Christians are to fellowship with God spiritually. We no longer consider Jesus in the flesh.

2Cr 5:16 Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we [him] no more.

  • Because Jesus died on it, and its in the shape to hang up someone on it for his arms and legs. btw it is in the bible so look it up. Jesus took lots of cruel things. People hurt him badly and he shouldn't of had that. but he loves us so much that he did that so we don't go to hell
read the bible i think its somewhere in the new testament

  • The cross is the christian symbol for the ultimate sacrifice. It is a reminder for christians and a mark for them - kind of like the star of David for Jews.

  • The cross is in the bible because Jesus was crucified on it.

It's not holy, we don't worship it.

It's a reminder of the ultimate sacrifice that he made for us and a reminder that we should do the same: die to self so that others might live.

  • Jesus said to "take up your cross and folow me", it's a symbolic element that represents his love for us by sacrificing himself on it. But no I agree the cross isn't holy, I don't believe that any symbol is holy, they are all just reminders of Christ the King!

  • the cross is the christian symbol for one reason. constantine the great saw the cross in the sky. jesus spoke to him in latin and said ' hoc signo victor eris or" which means "in this sign you will be victor". so constantine had his troops make a new battle standard that was called the ' laborum' he won the battle of the milivan bridge. he then made christianity the roman state religion and the cross became the christian symbol. here we are today christians are all over the world.

  • It seems like idolatry to me too, and the real symbol should be an open tomb, signifying the Resurrection, not the cross, signfying His death.
A cross itself is not holy. This is one of the contentions between Catholicism and Protestantism (idolatry) although the Protestants have adopted the symbol somewhat.

  • That's only one straw of thousands that broke the camel's back (well, my belief in Christianity, which began waning at a quite young age). Have fun.

Oh, and to answer your question, it is just a reminder of a familiar item from the religion, I guess.

  • Those two graven images are not part of the Bible. Show me a Star of David in the Old Testament and show me where God Yahweh of the Hebrews said a graven image is to keep.

  • The Cross is the symbol of Christianity because one of the main beliefs of the Christian religion is that we have all been saved of our mortal sins by Jesus when he died on the cross. The cross is the symbol of that salvation. This is why some Catholics wear crucifixes (a cross with the image of Jesus being crucified) around their necks.

  • The greatest victory ever won. Jesus overcame sin and death.

  • The first century x-tians adopted the symbol of a fish as the avatar for their new belief system because they were just entering the age of Pisces at the time.
Why or When the "cross" became predominant?... I have no idea.

  • Christians believe Jesus died for our sins. Maybe it is because the cross is what he died on for our sins that made it the symbol of Christianity. Maybe if he died on a rock, the symbol would be a rock. I do believe in god and I am Christian but I don't really know why the cross is the symbol. I'm gonna look it up on google. You should too.

  • That is funny Paki; when they say we worship the moon, I counter by saying they worship the cross, that ends the argument right away.

It still goes against one of the 10 commandments, which is similar to idolatry.

  • To many people, the cross is offensive. To others it is a decoration to be worn around the neck. For some, it is a symbol of the fact that they profess to be a Christian. Many Christians feel such love from Jesus who would die on the cross for the forgiveness of their sin.

  • it is because it was the place where Jesus shed his blood for us. It is the our chance to go to heaven. It is a holy place not a holy shape. Its just easier to put on a chain then the city of Jerusalem or Bethlehem. Places where Jesus travel and stayed or lived are all considered holy. The star of David represents something I don't know what, but I'm sure you could Google it.

  • You should study your bible more if you think the cross is not in the bible.

It's not that the cross is "holy", it is a symbol. It is a symbol sometimes used to represent Christianity because it is a reminder of the sacrifice Jesus made. He laid down his life, a living sacrifice. He is the one who is holy. He saved us all. Hope this helps. Best wishes*
