Marrow samples in adults and children?

Posted by mike under enart.hubeidaxue.com

  • A red marrow biopsy is ordered for two patients â “ a young child and an adult. The specimen is taken from the tibia of the child but from the iliac crest of the adult. why are different sites used to obtain marrow samples in adults and children?

  • It may be because children have more in some areas and adults in others.

  • it is easier to take bone marrow samples from the breast bone in both adults and children but is more painful and carries the risk of heart injury. adults can have marrow taken from the hip bone (iliac) to reduce the risk and lessen the pain. children will find it less painful to have it taken from the leg bone (tibia) and it is generally easier to get more marrow from the leg than the child's hip bone.
